Get started

Up and running in a minute

Four quick steps and your chat is ready for emotes.

Open the launcher

Start the LabyMod launcher and pick a LabyMod 4 version.

Find BetterEmote

Go to the Addons tab and search for BetterEmote.

Install & play

Click Install, then start the game. The launcher keeps the addon up to date.

Add emotes

Enable Advanced Chat (Settings → Ingame), then pick emotes in-game or on this website.

Log in with Discord to pick emotes for your chat menu or upload your own. Everything syncs to the addon.

How it works

The whole trick happens in chat text, so it works on any server.

You type

Addon converts

Your emote name becomes a short code: gg catJAM|a

Server relays

The server just sees a normal chat message.

Players with the addon see the emote. Others see the code.

Settings
EnabledTurns the addon on or off.
Emote MenuYour saved emotes. Search BetterTTV, paste links, rename and remove emotes.
Emote Menu KeyOpens the emote menu while playing. K by default.
Emote PrefixCharacter around the emote name. With the default : you type :catjam:.

Why do my friends only see text like catJAM|a?

Emotes are drawn by the addon on the receiving side. Players without BetterEmote see the emote code instead of the picture.

Emotes don’t show up at all.

Turn on Advanced Chat in LabyMod settings → Ingame. BetterEmote needs it to draw images in chat.

Can I use my own emotes?

Yes. Log in with Discord, link your Minecraft account and upload up to 10 of your own emotes. You can also add any emote from BetterTTV by pasting its link into the search field in BetterEmote.

Do I need an account?

Browsing emotes works without one. To save and upload emotes, log in with Discord and link your Minecraft account once through BetterEmote, which proves the account is yours. No password needed.

Can I get banned for using this?

BetterEmote only changes how chat looks on your own screen and sends normal chat text. Always follow the rules of the server you play on.

⚠ Known issues
  • Adding an emote that nobody has used before can fail right now, because the shared emote servers are blocked by a BetterTTV API change. Emotes that were added before keep working.
